Storage and care after snails at home

For a comfortable stay of snails, you have to create proper living conditions, namely:

  • maintain high humidity in the terrarium;
  • light and temperature mode
  • water procedures
  • sufficient ventilation
  • cleanness in the terrarium
  • prevention and control of pests
  • provide with juicy plant fodder in sufficient quantities

Where to keep snails at home?

Terrariums for snails can be purchased at a pet store, or you can construct one yourself. This can be a plastic container in which you need to make a lot of small holes (on the lid or on the side walls. The terrarium should not be small, from 20X20X40 for two – four adult snails (length of a shell from 8 cm)
Small and large snails are not kept together in one terrarium

For ease of replacing the soil and maintaining the terrarium, it is better to place the soil in a separate plastic container.

In addition to the container with the soil, you need to put a container with water in the terrarium (snails want to drink, swim). Its size depends on the size of snails

The soil should be mixed with calcium in the form of calcium glycerophosphate, ground egg shell, or pieces of chalk.

The soil for snails can be purchased at a pet store. The best choice is the coconut substrate, pieces of twigs, bamboo, moss.

How often to change the soil?

However careful you do the cleaning when digging in the soil, snails are still pulling small leftover food particles that have accumulated and rotting can become a source of insects. Therefore, regardless of the type of soil, replacement is necessary every two to three weeks, depending on the activity of the snail. If there is something moldy in the terrarium, the smell of swamps and the insects appeared, or it just became very dirty, then the soil should be changed immediately. Mold and insects are enemies of snails.

Do not place a container (terrarium) with snails near the battery, in the sun, in a draught.

The optimal temperature for snails is 20-24. Too low or too high temperature, which lasts for 2 to 3 days, can lead to the death of the snail, insufficient moisture in the terrarium will also damage them, so the soil should be wet (they are diggin in there to wait through the “drought”)
